Chemical Fume and VOC Air Purifiers
Perhaps you just had a room painted or some new carpets installed. Aaahhh, that new carpet smell. Hairspray, cleaning detergents, fire retardant chemicals used in new furnishings...all release chemicals into the air. Unfortunately, many are bad for you. So what's the problem?
Organic Gases (Volatile Organic Compounds - VOCs)
VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are emitted as gases and fumes from some solids or liquid products. VOCs are often released by a great number of products. Examples include: graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, cleaning supplies, paint strippers, paints and lacquers, permanent markers, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as printers and copiers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, pesticides and photographic solutions.
What does this all mean to you? It means that a normal home with windows closed is a virtual soup of chemical fumes and gases. And if you have developed chemical sensitivities - giving you headaches or dizzy spells, the problem gets serious quickly.
Fortunately, there are air purifiers well designed to oxidize or eliminate these VOCs from the air. The challenge is that people with bad chemical sensitivities often don't like the air purifiers either.
